Overview
This is the basic Gateway OEM Windows 98 and Windows Me driver for the SoundMAX Integrated sound card on E-1800 (Kittyhawk) and E-3600 (El Paso) computers.
Identification
Use the following steps to determine whether this driver applies to your computer.
1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. If you do not see this icon, click view all Control Panel options, and then double-click the System icon.
3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.
4. On the Device Manager tab, double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
5. SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio is listed under Sound, video and game controllers. If you do not have a listing for SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, this driver does not apply to your computer.
Installation
The following installation procedures are specifically for this version of driver and the installation files included within this release.
1. After you have downloaded and double-clicked the 7511153.exe file, the files self-extract and copy into the C:\cabs\7511153 folder.
2. Close all open programs.
3. Remove the current sound card drivers from Device Manager.
a. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
b. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. If you do not see this icon, click view all Control Panel options, and then double-click the System icon.
c. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.
d. On the Device Manager tab, double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
e. Under Sound, video and game controllers, select SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, and then click Remove.
f. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.
g. When complete, close the System Properties dialog box.
h. Close Control Panel.
4. Delete the Analog Devicessmwdm.inf file.
a. From the Start menu, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
b. In the Search Results window, in the Search for files or folders named text box, type: Devicessmwdm.inf.
c. In the Look in box, verify that Local Hard Drive C: is selected. If not, select this drive from the list, and then click Search Now.
d. When the search is complete, from the Edit menu, click Select All.
e. From the File menu, click Delete.
f. In the Confirm File Delete dialog box, click Yes.
g. When complete, from the File menu, click Close.
5. Restart the computer, and then install the audio drivers from the C:\cabs\7511153 folder.
a. From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the What would you like the computer to do list, select Restart, and then click OK.
b. When Windows restarts, new hardware is detected, and the Add New Hardware Wizard opens.
c. In the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, click Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), and then click Next.
d. Verify that Search for the best driver for your device is selected, and then select the Specify a location check box.
e. In the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, click to clear the Removable Media check box.
f. In the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, type: C:\cabs\7511153. Click Next.
g. In the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, click Next, and then click Next again.
h. In the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, click Finish.
i. In the System Settings Change dialog box, click Yes to restart the computer.
6. Test the sound by shutting down and restarting the computer several times.
Removal
1. Remove the current sound card drivers from Device Manager.
a. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
b. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. If you do not see this icon, click view all Control Panel options, and then double-click the System icon.
c. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.
d. On the Device Manager tab, double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
e. Under Sound, video and game controllers, select SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, and then click Remove.
f. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.
g. When complete, close the System Properties dialog box.
h. Close Control Panel.
2. Delete the Analog Devicessmwdm.inf file.
a. From the Start menu, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
b. In the Search Results window, in the Search for files or folders named text box, type: Devicessmwdm.inf.
c. In the Look in box, verify that Local Hard Drive C: is selected. If not, select this drive from the list, and then click Search Now.
d. When the search is complete, from the Edit menu, click Select All.
e. From the File menu, click Delete.
f. In the Confirm File Delete dialog box, click Yes.
g. When complete, from the File menu, click Close.
Troubleshooting
If you are having difficulty during driver installation or after, perform these troubleshooting steps.
1. Verify that all cables are securely connected.
2. If applicable, verify that the computer is set to analog or digital, depending on the speakers you have, by following this procedure.
a. From the Start menu, point to All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, and then click Volume Control.
b. In the Volume Control window, below the Play Control Volume slider, click Advanced.
Note: If the Advanced option does not appear below the Play Control Volume slider, from the Options menu, click Advanced Controls.
c. In the Advanced Options for Play Control dialog box, digital output is enabled if the Digital Output Only check box is selected. If the check box is clear, analog output is enabled.
d. Select or clear the Digital Output Only check box for the type of output that you want to use, and then click Close.
3. Review the preceding software installation procedure. Ensure that you did not miss any of the steps.
4. Verify that your operating system is Windows 98 or Windows Me as these drivers are only functional under for these operating systems.
5. If you still have difficulties installing this file, download the file again, and then ensure that all instructions in this document are followed.
Reason for Update
This is the latest Gateway-supported basic driver for the SoundMAX Integrated sound card.
