Advantages of the microphone:
Ease of use, due to integration with the laptop. Good, clear sound. In the system settings, you can specify a communications profile for the microphone. There's also an "Audio Enhancements" section, with options of "Off", "Default Device Effects", and "Voice Clarity". There's an additional setting called "Voice Focus", with a description that says, "Reduces background noise to help your voice stand out clearly", and has the options of "Automatic", "Off", and "On".
Disadvantages of the microphone:
Due to the distance between the speaker and the microphone, it tends to pick up much more background noise than, say, a microphone within a set of earbuds or on a headset.
